WindGuard Certification provides
retrofit for FRT test device

Technology upgrade and integration
in one space-saving container

Varel, 2022-08-18: In the field of test equipment manufacturing, WindGuard Certification recently successfully completed a comprehensive reference project with support from Langer E-Technik: On customer behalf, the two companies from Varel, Germany, retrofitted an existing test device for Fault-Ride-Through (FRT) tests on power generating units such as wind energy turbines and solar plants, energy storage units and combustion engines.

The test equipment enables low voltage and high voltage ride-through (LVRT and HVRT) tests to prove dynamic grid support according to current guidelines such as FGW TR 3 and IEC 61400-21-1 as well as international standards. For this purpose, fault conditions in the public grid are simulated, and the behaviour of the power generating unit is documented.

WindGuard Certification and Langer E-Technik have accommodated the entire equipment for performing Fault-Ride-Through (FRT) tests on power generating units in one 40’ container.

“Our customer commissioned us to combine two existing test containers for under and over voltage tests into one container, to implement latest technology and to prepare it for the next generation of power generating units with a connectable output of 30 MVA,” explains Damian Slowinski, Head of Test Laboratory and Test Equipment Manufacturing. “This solution fits into a 40’ container and significantly reduces effort and cost of transport and set-up at the site.”

With its own test laboratory accredited by the German Accreditation Body (DAkkS) according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025, WindGuard Certification is also well acquainted with the user perspective: “Our own daily work experience with test equipment naturally contributes to the development of new concepts,” says Damian Slowinski, “this special know-how particularly distinguishes us and perfectly supplements our many years of extensive expertise in the construction of test equipment.”

“This retrofit is an excellent addition to our reference portfolio in the area of test equipment manufacturing,” summarises Lars Weigel, Managing Director of WindGuard Certification, “we have thus proven that we can also enhance existing test equipment to create a future-proof solution.” Over the past few years, WindGuard Certification has already built five new test containers for various international requirements, has led a construction project and has also developed a mobile low voltage test device for its own test laboratory.
